Our return to Nha Trang gave us the opportunity to explore this beach city closeup, by using local transportation. We rode the pedicabs (tricycle type vehicles) through the busy streets, competing with motor bikes, cars, buses and even, too close for comfort, an ambulance.
Nha Trang’s beautiful white beaches have made it an attractive tourist draw for decades. The building boom in this century quadrupled the population, but was toppled into crisis by COVID.Right next to the modern high rise hotels are still the older, traditional style buildings with their mass of jerry-rigged electrical wires snaking across the streets.Look closely at the French Colonial style building on the left and you can see the Buddha statue on the roof.Riverfront homes, often built on stilts, that are now slums are a feature of many of the cities we’ve visited. The hodgepodge of architectural styles from this city’s different phases and settlers is evident on this street. This is the local government building or, as the sign calls it, “The People’s Committee.”Nha Trang is known for its Disneyesque amusement park, the Vinpearl. We had a good view of it from our ship.Everyone loves a bargain, including these monks shopping at a local market.
