Ha Long Bay

This port was our gateway to Hanoi, but it is also an attractive resort area. One of the things Ha Long is known for is its spectacular caves. We took a boat cruise over to one of them them, Thien Cung, which means heavenly palace. The amazing stalactites and stalacmites, formed over hundreds of thousands of years, create a fairy tale appearance.

A view of the city from the bay.
Families live and work on these little fishing boats.
A half hour boat ride took us across the bay to the little island where the cave was.
These twin rocks, which look like they are teetering on their narrow bases, are an emblem for the city.
It was a steep climb in and out of the grotto, but the views of the formations were worth it.
